It is the dedication to quality and detail paired with constant quest for excellence and perfection that makes dentistry so special. Contemporary Dentistry is evidence-based, so as practitioners we draw a lot of what we do from research. Recent advances in all aspects of dentistry have been numerous and impressive in the last decade and there seems to be no end. Considering the fact that research is now an integral part of dentistry, our aim should be to make a scientist out of every graduating dentist and for that dental students would need to be nurtured in an environment steeped in research and populated by outstanding scientists. Improved patient care resulting from technical advances made possible through research is undisputed. What is less apparent, however, is the role of research in the education of dentists and in the broader life in dental schools.
An education colored by research is one way of achieving the intellectual rigor necessary for the professional. The key is cultivating in students an apt for research and for problem solving. In doing so, we will generate a few scientists; but, more importantly, we will create out of every graduate a potent researcher. Only by becoming a researcher, is there any hope that the practitioner will be able to acquire and assimilate new knowledge and to adapt to the changes in practice and in the profession that the future requires.
Considering the importance of research, AOSR is being launched by Government Dental College and Research Institute, Bangalore, India with the aim of putting dental researchers in India on the international map. I strongly encourage all academicians and clinical researchers to participate whole heartedly in this promising venture and publish their work.
I would like to express my heartfelt profound gratitude to the honourble Dr.S.Ramananda Shetty, Vice-Chancellor, RGUHS, Bangalore, India and Dr. S.S.Hiremeth, Director & Dean, GDCRI, Bangalore, India for their constant and valuable support and for having so much faith in me.
